Horror Favorites with yOyO Suicide
"Is that the Halloween 3 skull mask she's wearing?!"
That was one of my first thoughts upon stumbling into Wickedland. yOyOinWickedland is the full name of the blog spearheaded by yOyO Suicide. She's a Michigan-based online store owner and alt model, (as well as stellar cosplayer-- check out her Halloween 4 Jamie Lloyd and interpretation of Eleven from Stranger Things on Instagram) that possesses an alluring penchant for blending style with all things very much horror. But what's equally impressive is her craft hustle helming stores, Wickledland Jewelry and Sugar & Spice DIY where you can find an array of fringe accessories.
I thought yOyO was an excellent candidate for the Horror Favorites exercise that is much more about how we interpret horror texts in pure form. Right next to past participants, yOyO's picks are exemplary.
Favorite horror films with dolls?
Dead Silence. Doll movies have always really freaked me out so they were never at the top of my list to see. But I'm a big fan of the guys behind Dead Silence so I saw it as soon as it came out and it's actually one of my all time favorite horror movies.
Favorite horror film with ghosts?
I tend to really favor ghost movies that feature the ghosts as main characters, and you might not realize until the end that they're actually dead. My favorite at the moment is The Uninvited (sorry for the spoiler!), definitely one of my favorite endings.
Favorite horror film with witches?
As much as I love The Craft, I would have to say that Rosemary's Baby is my favorite witch movie. It's so subtle and spooky and I love the aesthetic and atmosphere of the whole film.
Favorite horror film with demons?
Stephen Kings IT. This was my first horror movie ever at the age of 9 and watching it was like an event in my house. Me and my sister both became pretty obsessed with it and it not only sparked my love for horror, but also for Stephen King in general. Pennywise is also one of my fave horror movie icons.
Favorite horror film with mirrors?
Poltergeist 3. This is another one I saw pretty young and to this day I get uneasy around certain mirrors. You won't ever catch me playing Bloody Mary.
Favorite horror film with aliens?
Event Horizon for sure. Perfect blend of sci-fi and horror.
Favorite horror film franchise?
Absolutely the Saw films. The first Saw is my favorite horror movie of all time and I love how well all the movies are connected, and how the story line plays out. I'm also a huge Leigh Whannell fan and really admire the fact that he not only wrote the movie, but is in it as well.
Favorite horror film hero?
This is probably the hardest question for me because I'm never rooting for the good guy in a horror movie (or any movie really) but I do recall being pretty impressed with Aaron Stanford's character in The Hills Have Eyes.
Favorite horror film villain?
Hannibal, Hannibal, Hannibal. He's a monster and I love it. (also I'm a fan of all versions: Anthony Hopkins, Mads Mikkelsen, Gaspard Ulliel, they're all amazing at the role)
Favorite horror film scene?
Hands down, the ending of the first SAW movie. This is definitely my favorite ending ever for so many reasons. I was scared. I remember just really being terrified the first time I saw it. I didn't see it coming. Probably one of the best twists ever in a horror movie. And the cinematography is so on point, it's really effective, my heart rate races every time I watch it, it never gets old.
Favorite horror film kill?
The rope kill scene from Hannibal Rising, when young Hannibal ties Dortlich to the tree and use the horse to strangle him and cut his throat. It's something really different and it's pretty graphic and bloody and I'm definitely a bit of a gore whore. The more blood the better!
Favorite horror TV show?
Hannibal (surprised?)! I love NBC Hannibal so much. I think it has to be the most gruesome thing they've ever shown on a channel like NBC. It wasn't just horrific either, it was extremely dynamic and atmospheric. The aesthetic was amazing and the acting and characters were the best. And their interrupting and remaking of some of the story line was really creative and unmatched. I miss it dearly, still hanging on for a possible 4th season hopefully coming soon.
Favorite horror book?
I don't know if I can single out just one, but I am a pretty big R.L. Stine fan. I still have a big collection of his books (plus lots of other teen horror from high school), I'm pretty partial to the Fear Street series and Goosebumps of course.
Favorite horror collectible you own?
My Will Graham as Hannibal Pop Vinyl toy I got from my sister last Christmas.
Horror film that you hate but everyone else loves?
Aliens. I've actually never seen this movie because I'm not a huge sci-fi fan. I've always seen this as more of a sci-fi and I've never really understood why it ranks so high on so many top horror movie lists. I'm sure it's very scary but just not my cup of tea.
Horror film that you love but everyone else hates?
Jennifer's Body. I'm not sure if this is really a movie people hate but I really adore it and I tend to not find many other people that share my love for this film.
Horror film character that you love but everyone else hates?
Probably Henry Bowers from Stephen King's IT. This was my first horror movie ever, I think I was around 9 yrs old when I first saw it and I just loved Henry Bowers. Pretty sure everyone else despised him because he was a jerk and bully.
