#SciFiSunday: Dystopian Web Series, Resistance: The Battle Of Philadelphia

Filmmaker M. Asli Dukan, the woman behind the epic Invisible Universe: a history of blackness in speculative fiction, my much anticipated look at a new horror anthology Skin Folk, and more is currently turning the spotlight on her latest project, a futuristic web series that tackles unjust policing and imposition in a community where one hacker sparks a revolution by using technological ingenuity to dismantle their tools. The few will become the many in stopping oppressive forces in Resistance: the battle of philadelphia.

Resistance: the battle of philadelphia will be a six-part series set in the Pennsylvania city's West Philadelphia neighborhood. Mixing sci-fi elements with our real world issues, Resistance "will not only tackle subjects that are critical to our current conversations around social justice, e.g., police brutality, but will also connect to the long history of community resistance to police brutality in the city of Philadelphia." Asli's thoughtful execution spans from her career as an artist whose work directly reflects the sociopolitical struggles of marginalized people:

For the past several years, police brutality has become the subject of a highly public, national debate in our Internet-connected society. However, in African American communities across the United States, police brutality is an historical issue that has plagued the well-being and safety of Black people for over 300 hundred years. 

As campaigns to reform police departments and to abolish police departments collectively raise their voices across the country, I wanted to add my own voice to the public conversation through my art. And as my films, often revolve around the idea of Black Speculation, I began to wonder how to tell a story about Black resistance to police brutality in a futuristic context? Resistance: the battle of philadelphia is an attempt to create a work of art that not only entertains, but enlightens and empowers the audience. 

Inspired by films like Mamoru Oshii’s Avalon (2001), Lizzie Borden’s Born in Flames (1983), Sam Greenlee’s The Spook Who Sat By The Door (1973) and Gillo Pontecorvo’s The Battle of Algiers (1967), the series uses the genres of speculative fiction to tell a historically rich and dramatically complex near-future narrative about the struggle for justice and liberation.
